Siege of Mirkwood

E-mail Print PDF

Well, here it comes, the new expansion for LOTRO has been announced.  The biggest surprise so far is that it was *not* "Riders of Rohan."  Turbine has decided, instead, to take us east, into the southwestern "bulge" of Mirkwood Forest.  This should be an excellent, if smaller then expected expansion pack.  Mirkwood itself encompasses nearly as much geographical area as the existing Zones in the game, including in it's expanse the stronghold of Dol Guldur - where Sauron fled to recover his strength, later putting it in the charge of the second most powerful of the Nazgul.  During the War of the Ring, several assaults were launched from Dol Guldur against one or the other of Lothlorien to the West or Thranduil's woodland stronghold of Silvan Elves far to the Northeast.  Also nestled into the edge of the forests western edge, not far to the northeast of Dol Guldur, is Rhosgobel - the home of Gandalf's "cousin" Radagast the Brown.

Mirkwood has the potential to be a very interesting addition to the game.

LOTRO forums look more like WoW

E-mail Print PDF

I'm appalled.

For years, I've been pointing out to people that even though we have our arguments in the LOTRO forums, that the maturity level there has always been maintained at a much higher level then in the forums of other games I've been involved with, and most particularly, have never devolved to the depths seen in the World of Warcraft forums.  WoW attracted a much younger crowd of gamers, probably because of Blizzard.net, then most MMORPGs seem to.  And you can see it in the forums.  Baseless rants, demands to change aspects if the game with no explanations of the perceived problem, calling the devs names - there's an effect way to encourage them to look into your problem, and broad, sweeping generalizations were rampant.

Lotro:MoM The First Week.

E-mail Print PDF

Wow.  And I don't mean some other game.

The first week of the MoM launch has been simply awesome.  Launch went off without a hitch, servers came up right at midnight on the morning of the 18th ... and instantly filled the server queues.  The old adage "never play on patch day" still holds water ... after more then 2 hours of trying, I gave up and went to bed. :-)  People might look at that asa bad launch - I don't.  I think it's totally awesome that so many people were trying to get into the game even that early in the morning.

By my totally unscientific estimate, LOTRO has passed the 1,000,000 mark for sold subscriptions.  They also won the voting for which game should be featured on the cover of Massive Gamer magazine for December ... which, with 3 big game expansions all hitting the shelves around now, is also huge.  Exposure is something what will never hurt this game.

The one thing that really surprises me about the launch is that there haven't been tons of whining posts in the official forums.  With the broad changes to the combat system, I expected wails of anguish from the min/max types.  Apparently they're taking pre-patch advice from testers, and actually playing the changes before they fly off the handle.  More proof that the LOTRO community is an older and wiser one then some others.

Lord of the Rings Online: Mines of Moria Day Two

E-mail Print PDF

Day two of the Mines of Moria.  As predicted, there are all sorts of wild-eyed frantics posting about how the game is "a shadow of it's former self," in which everyone has been personally targetted by Turbine for nerfs, just to make their favourite class "totally unplayable.  There are people posting that the game should have stayed in Beta longer - in fact, people that claim to have *been* in beta.

I was in the Alpha.  It was nearly flawless then.   Beta improved things.  But even as early as alpha I was of the opinion then that the game was nearly ready for launch.  It's so much better then expansion pack launches I've seen in many other mmo's.

And then there's "Book 15 is a bad joke!"  Well *soooo-rry!" you don't like it.  Did anyone ask?  I mean seriously, you don't like messenger quests.  Does that really entitle you to go into the forums and post stuff like "To the architect of this travesty of a quest arc: you are an abominable human being. Turbine should fire you, if not take you out into the street and shoot you like a dog."  Really.  In this post.  Frankly, there *is* an abominable human being involved in this thread...and it's not a Turbine employee.  Regoss?  You should be taken out into the street and shot like a dog.  Just saying.

It amazes me, the social ineptitude that people feel they can display in a gaming forum while they're cloaked under an anonymous internet handle.  If you walked into an office and said something like that you'd be arrested and charged with assault.  But no, this is the internet and the nameless and faceless (and brainless) can say anything they want, to anyone.  There's no real human beings involved, what's it matter if a slam an anonymous dev?  Man, and people wonder why the Loremaster's dev won't post in the forums.  There's a good example of why he won't - and why they aren't required to do so.
